Public Beta for Mac OS X Yosemite Said to Kick Off Tomorrow

Jul 23 2014 11:27PM EST | Source: MacLife.com

One of the big Mac-centric announcements this year was the introduction of a new public beta for those of us who aren't developers. On July 24, The Loop reports, Apple will continue that tradition by throwing open the doors for its beta for Mac OS X Yosemite a few months ahead of its release sometime this fall.

If you're interested, you can sign up to join the beta via Apple's public registration site right now using your Apple ID, and if all goes well, you'll be able to jump into the public beta straightaway once it goes live tomorrow. Simply enter the code you receive after registration into the Mac App Store, and you're apparently all set to go (provided, that is, that you already have a Mac running OS X Mavericks).

It is a beta, so keep in mind that something could go disastrously wrong. Just in case some such calamity occurs, Apple recommends that you install the beta on a secondary Mac. Indeed, some of the most lauded features of Apple's desktop operating system might not even be available for testing right now, such as phone calls, SMS, Handoff, Instant Hotspot, and iCloud drive.

Still, every extra set of eyes on the project ensures that it'll run more smoothly once it releases its official launch, so be sure to send in those error reports if you do participate.
