Chinese Police Detain Suspected iPhone 6 Leaker

Leaks from the iPhone supply line over in China have become so common in recent years that covering them is now routine, but at last Apple supplier Foxconn is taking steps to crack down on some of them. As reported by the Wall Street Journal (via China's Taihang Daily), one of the alleged culprits behind the leaks of the shell of the iPhone 6 is now in custody for selling the shells on the black market.

The suspect is a 40-year-old male Foxconn employee known only by the surname of Qiao. According to the Journal, he first snuck out of the factory with an iPhone 6 shell on July 24.

That day, the article says, "Qiao hid one shell in his pocket and successfully avoided the security check by leaving at the peak of quitting time, when lots of workers swarm out of the factory at the same time. He sent the shell to an advertised address in Shenzhen [now a popular destination for leaked parts] via a local courier service and received his money couple days later."

Qiao allegedly would go on to send five more shells to the address. All total, he is said to have received 6,000 yuan ($960) for the leaked parts.

Foxconn took an active role in finding whoever was responsible. The company realized some shells were missing after counting them and reported the incident to the police, after which the company spent 20 days searching video footage for the guilty party.

Now that Qiao is in custody, a security team claims to be investigating the incident. Apple has reportedly declined to comment, and in a statement to Cnet, Foxconn itself said only that "we have a strict Company Code of Conduct that our company and our employees are expected to follow and we do not hesitate to take the appropriate action, including bringing matters to the attention of the relevant law enforcement authorities, should we determine that this Code has been violated."
