Apple World AIDS Day

Seeing some of your favorite iOS apps going (RED)? Don't worry, it's all part of a new Apple promotion that also includes donations to the Global Fund for the fight against AIDS this Friday and next Monday as well. Our Monday Morning Report has all of the details, along with news that Square will be adding Apple Pay support in 2015, and an innovative new way to record Mac-based FaceTime calls. Don't delay, click ahead!

Apple Kicks Off (RED) Promotion Ahead of World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is coming up next Monday, December 1, and Apple is bringing the fight against the disease to its own doorstep this year with a big promotion to help raise awareness and funds this holiday season.

“Apple is a proud supporter of (RED) because we believe the gift of life is the most important gift anyone can give,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “For eight years, our customers have been helping fight AIDS in Africa by funding life-saving treatments which are having a profoundly positive impact. This year we are launching our biggest fundraising push yet with the participation of Apple’s retail and online stores, and some of the brightest minds in the App Store are lending their talents to the effort as well.”

For the next two weeks, Apple and select App Store developers will offer 25 "fan-favorite apps" offering exclusive new (RED) content available via in-app purchase. Through Sunday, December 7, all proceeds from these apps or in-app purchases will go the Global Fund, including popular titles such as Angry Birds, djay 2, Star Walk 2, Clear, and Apple's own GarageBand for iOS, which is now offering a special 99-cent collection of 300 guitar, bass, synth, and drum loops.

On Black Friday (November 28), U.S. customers purchasing select Apple products will receive a special edition (RED) gift card, and Cupertino will donate a percentage of each sale made with those cards as well. Last but not least, all Apple retail and online sales made next Monday, December 1 will include a similar donation.

Square Plans to Add Apple Pay Option Next Year

Curious how Apple plans to grow Apple Pay beyond the more than 200,000 locations where the mobile payment system is already accepted? According to AppleInsider, popular small business services provider Square is planning a new point-of-sale cash register capable of accepting NFC-based payments from Apple Pay (and presumably others, like Google Wallet or SoftCard).

Square founder Jack Dorsey confirmed the plans in a recent interview with CNN, which are expected sometime next year. It's unclear if the more popular Square Reader will gain Apple Pay support, although the company is working on "an entirely new type of register" that will indeed work with NFC hardware.

Ecamm Debuts Mac-Based Call Recorder for FaceTime

Just in time for the holidays, Ecamm Network announced a new product Friday known as Call Recorder for FaceTime, a Mac-based solution that does exactly what you think it does: Record FaceTime audio or video calls, and thanks to OS X Yosemite, iPhone Handoff calls as well. The $29.95 software is now available for download with a seven-day free trial, and is likely to be quite popular with families who want to be able to relive those precious moments where technology brings them together, over and over again.
