Apple Daily: Apple Watch Event Clues, AAPL Stock Reaches New High, TUAW Closure

Jan 31 2015 12:17AM EST | Source: MacLife.com

In today's news, Apple might be preparing for another big media event showcasing the Apple Watch, judging by a request it recently sent a major developer. Elsewhere, Apple's stock hit yet another all-time high today, and on a more tragic note, long-running Apple blog TUAW will close as a result of recent cuts at AOL.

Apple Asks Some Devs to Have Apple Watch Apps Ready By Next Month

The Apple Watch won't show up on store shelves until April, according to CEO Tim Cook, but as MacRumors reports, the Cupertino company is asking at least one big (unidentified) app developer to have its Apple Watch apps ready to launch on the App Store by February 12.

It's currently not clear why Apple wants such an early launch date for this particular developer (and it's possible it contacted others), but there's little chance it means we'll see the long-awaited piece of wearable tech around Valentine's Day. More likely, it means that Apple either wants to have a few key apps ready for a big media event in February or March, or that it wants to check the battery life with third-party apps before it releases the unit into the wild.

In related news (also via MacRumors), "thousands" of Apple employees have reportedly been seen wearing Apple Watches in and around the San Francisco Bay area, indicating that Apple's all but ready for the device's launch.

Apple Stock Reaches $120, a New All-Time High

By now the news is probably a little old hat, but there's a new little tidbit regarding the impact of Apple's spectacular quarterly report for Q1 2015. As AppleInsider notes, the news caused AAPL stock to shoot up to $120, representing a new record for the company and another boost to its seemingly inevitable market valuation of $700 billion.

Apple's stock last record-breaking high was in November of 2014, when it reached $119 per share. Since then, it's danced around $110. Most investors, especially Carl Icahn, seem convinced that Apple stock could go up further still, and indeed, it'll be interesting to see what happens if the Apple Watch is as popular as Tim Cook and friends hope it is.

AOL Said to Shutter TUAW

As a part of a larger "restructuring" push that's also behind the tragic shuttering of well-known gaming site Joystiq, AOL will reportedly be shutting down The Unofficial Apple Weblog, better known as TUAW (via The Verge). The site is expected to close for good on Monday, February 2.

TUAW is one of the old hands in the Apple news and reviews business, having been around since December of 2004. Its closure marks yet another step in a sad trend we've seen elsewhere. Earlier this month, the U.K.'s MacUser magazine closed its doors, and last September Macworld magazine ceased the publication of its print edition in order to focus on online content. In addition, Macworld canceled its long-running Macworld/iWorld Expo indefinitely.
