Jimmy Kimmel Shows Possible Success of iWatch with $20 Casio Gag

If you've ever had any doubts that the so-called iWatch is going to be a success, consider the "evidence" amassed by perennial prankster Jimmy Kimmel last night. In the video below, Kimmel's team pesters passersby on Hollywood Boulevard and tells them to check out Apple's upcoming smartwatch, and for the most part, they all respond enthusiastically. The catch? It's just a $20 Casio watch with an Apple logo slapped on the back.

"I like that it has an Apple insignia on the back," one person said. "If it's Apple, it's good, right?" Plenty of people thought so, even though the watch Kimmel's team was passing around lacked the ability to do anything besides report the time and date. It was especially appealing, one person said, because the numbers were so easy to see.

Funny stuff, but it's likely just as much a testament to the quality people expect from Apple products as it is a reflections of their willingness to buy into the Apple mythos. Indeed, at least one of the people had a response that Apple might do well to heed in designing the final product: "It's very lightweight and it's kind of old school, but still in style." Sounds like something I'd like to wear.

Kimmel also took the opportunity to poke some fun at the upcoming iPhone 6 units, which are widely rumored to feature much larger screens than we've seen on the device in the past. " "They make the bigger phones, and then in two years they'll release the iPhone mini, which is the size of the phones we have now," Kimmel said. "And we'll wait in line for like three days for it because that's how we are."
