Apple Stores to Start Replacing Broken iPhone 5s Displays on Site

Apple users have long waited for the day when the Cupertino company would start providing iPhone 5s screen replacements inside its retail stores, and according to 9to5Mac, that day is Monday. Unfortunately, as with so many things from the folks in Cupertino, it won't come cheap.

But at least it's cheaper. The whole initiative reportedly marks another step in Apple's ongoing quest to reduce repair costs, and the shift to repairing the screen in-house will drop the fee down to $150 (if you don't have AppleCare). In the past, you'd have to pay $229, send the device to an off-site repair center, and have only a vague notion of when you'd get your handset back. Alternatively, you could just fork out $265 for a replacement phone.

Large shipments of replacement screens for the iPhone 5s are already on the way to stores, according to the report, and they'll be available by Monday, August 4. Apple started offering services for other forms of in-store iPhone 5s repairs late last year.

As it turns out, it's as appealing a move for Tim Cook and friends as it is for us. In May of 2013, Apple reported that in-shop repairs could save the company has much as $1 billion per year. At the time, Apple was referring to cameras, sleep/wake buttons, and even logic boards; with screen replacements, the potential for savings might be even greater.
