Apple Pay Reached 1% of All Digital Payment Dollars in November

Apple Pay has only been around since October, but according to a new report from ITG, the service has already grabbed 1 percent of the total digital payment dollars spent in the U.S. in November. If the trend continues, the report suggests, Apple has already won itself a more loyal mobile payment audience than some rival services like PayPal. That's an impressive gain for so short a period, especially since ITG notes that Google Wallet has only managed to reach 4 percent since its release in 2011.

For specifics, 60 percent of Apple Pay users used the service multiple times throughout November compared to the mere 20 percent of PayPal users who used the service more than once per month. (ITG isn't clear, but the vast majority of other digital payments seem to come from PayPal.) Apple Pay adopters often used it at the same location, too, as 66 percent of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners used the service again after using it on the first visit.

And now we venture into stereotype territory. ITG reported that Whole Foods saw the most Apple Pay transactions, to the point that 1/5 of all Apple Pay purchases were made at the popular market. Walgreens came in second, accounting for 19 percent of all Apple Pay transactions. The numbers differ significantly in terms of Apple dollars spent, however, with Whole Foods bringing in a staggering 28 percent and Walgreens reaching only 12 percent.

Apple Pay is available at more than 200,000 retail locations throughout the United States. The Cupertino company itself hasn't revealed much information about the service's success, but Apple CEO Tim Cook said back in October that more than one million credit and debit cards were activated on the service during its first 72 hours.
